The Future Of The Atlanta Falcons
After a great finish to the 2008 season, the Falcons were the toast of the NFL. Coming off of a few losing seasons, the team was revitalized, thanks in large part to three people.
Matt Ryan, for one, was a more than competent rookie quarterback, and lived up to the hype cast upon any number one draft pick. Roddy White was a third year wide receiver who was continually improving his trade, and finally had the breakout season that so many had predicted. Additionally, the critical signing of Michael Turner gave a huge boost to this team's offense. Turner was one of the best running backs in football last season, besting 1700 yards and 1700 touchdowns. This didn't surprise me much, since he was coming from San Diego, where he learned from Ladainian Tomlinson.
The Atlanta Falcons have the benefit of playing in the NFC South - that should create easy wins for them over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Falcons face some tough opponents in the New York Jets, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints twice - these teams should provide the Falcons with a good test to see where they stand amongst the NFL elite. With no clear cut favorite to come out the NFC - the Falcons could be the "dark horse" of the NFC.
The Falcons acquired future Hall of Famer TE Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs for practically nothing. With a professional like Gonzalez on the Falcons - this can only increase Matt Ryan's confidence and help him improve overall as a quarterback in the NFL.
RB Michael Turner will have a huge role in the Falcons success this year again without question. Turner had a monster season in 08' playing all 16 games with nearly 1,700 yards, 17 touchdowns, and averaged 6.8 yards per touch. Matt Ryan has a good assortment of targets to choose from - TE Tony Gonzalez, WR Roddy White, and WR Michael Jenkins also.
If the Falcons can stay with the New Orleans Saints and somehow win the division or get a wild card birth - we all know anything can happen in the playoffs being it's single game elimination. Don't forget the old saying, "anything can happen on any given Sunday!
